❓❗ Why are the traps on my Venus flytrap turning black?

Smiling grower with healthy Venus flytraps – expert advice on black traps and plant care in South Africa

💬 Don’t worry — it’s totally normal for older traps to blacken and die off ✂️ Each trap only opens and closes a few times before it’s done. It’s just part of the plant’s natural cycle and normal aging (natural dieback)

However, if multiple traps are turning black quickly, or if the center of the plant looks soft or mushy, it could be something else:

  • Under or overwatering
  • Mineral buildup and soil issues
  • Pests or disease
  • Seasonal changes, especially winter rest / dormancy
