🌱 How to Sow Carnivorous Plant Seeds – The Cultivo Way
This step-by-step guide works for most carnivorous plant seeds — it’s the exact method I use to grow many of the plants at Cultivo. Growing carnivorous plants from seed is incredibly rewarding, but it takes time. Follow the steps closely for the best results.
Some species need a cold (winter) period to trigger germination. Check your seed packet — if it says so, follow the cold stratification step below. If not, skip it and continue straight through.

Step 1: Prepare the Growing Medium
- Prepare a growing substrate using 2 parts chopped long-fiber sphagnum and 1 part perlite. You can also use sphagnum peat and/or washed silica sand. The goal is a mix that’s light and airy, holds water well, drains easily and is free from fertiliser, salt, lime, or minerals.
- Moisten the mix thoroughly with distilled or reverse osmosis water. It should feel damp, not soggy.
-
Microwave the mix: Place the moist mix in a microwave-safe container and heat on high for 2–3 minutes until steaming. Let it cool completely.
This sterilises the growing medium — reducing the chance of unwanted spores germinating alongside your seeds.
Step 2: Prepare Your Pot or Planter
- Use a clean plastic pot, tub, or deli container with drainage holes. Avoid terracotta (it dries out quickly and leaches minerals).
- Fill with your cooled, damp substrate. Gently level the surface just below the rim.
- Label the container with the species and sowing date — especially helpful if you’re sowing multiple types or growing slow-germinating species.
Step 3: Sow the Seeds
- Carefully open the packet — some carnivorous plant seeds are tiny, like dust.
- Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the surface. Do not bury them; they need light to germinate.
- Mist lightly with a spray bottle (RO or distilled water) so the seeds settle into contact with the substrate.
- Cover with a clear lid, plastic dome, or ziplock bag (poke holes for ventilation). This creates a humid environment for germination.
❄️ If Cold Stratification Is Required
Some temperate species need a cold period to trigger germination. Sow in autumn or winter in natural conditions, or use the fridge method below:
- Place the covered container inside a sealed ziplock bag to hold humidity.
- Refrigerate for 4–8 weeks at 2–5°C (salad drawer works well).
- Check every 10–14 days for dryness. Mist lightly with water if the mix starts to dry.
- After stratification, remove from the fridge and continue from Step 4 below.
Step 4: Create the Right Environment
- Place your container somewhere warm and bright — but not in direct sun. Ideal daytime temps: 18–25°C.
- If indoors, use a grow light or daylight bulb for 12–14 hours a day. This greatly improves germination.
- Stand the pot in a tray with ±1 cm of clean water. Allow the tray to dry slightly between refills.
- Lift the lid or open the bag every few days for airflow. This helps prevent mould and strengthens young seedlings.
- Now wait — most seeds sprout in 4–10 weeks, but some species may take months. Don’t disturb the setup. Keep it consistent and moist.
Step 5: After Germination
- Once you see green seedlings, open the cover gradually over 7–10 days until fully removed.
- Continue watering from below. Avoid touching the seedlings until they’re at least 3–4 cm tall — be patient, this can take months!
- When ready, gently repot into fresh carnivorous plant soil or leave them to grow together for bushier growth. Keep in mind the roots are extremely fine and fragile — take your time and use tweezers if needed.
💡 Tips for Success:
- Fresh seed offers better germination rates — for best results, sow as soon as you receive your seeds.
- Keep humidity high, but airflow balanced — mould is usually caused by stagnant conditions like poor ventilation, low light, and cold, damp environments.
- Change tray water every 3–5 days, or sooner if it discolours or smells.
