Happy customer

My plants arrived 1 day after I got my update email. The butterwort in particular was very carefully packaged and in excellent condition. Very good sized specimen and even had a baby plant at the base. This plant has been in my care for under 3 weeks and it’s already putting out new leaves. Thank you cultivo carnivors for the fantastic variety plants and making online shopping painless. Highly recommended

Product Details

This chunky-leaved Mexican butterwort is a favourite among orchid collectors, terrarium growers, and anyone battling fungus gnats — and it’s easy to see why. Pinguicula Gigantea × Moctezumae combines beauty and function in one compact plant: sticky, glistening leaves trap muggies and other tiny flyers that annoy your plants.

Vibrant leaves, soft pink flowers, and bug-munching skills to match, this hybrid thrives in bright indoor light, under artificial grow lights, or in terrarium setups. It also looks incredible in paludariums or mounted displays — yes, pings on rocks are totally a thing! Bonus: bugs are drawn to the light, so this ping practically feeds itself 😎

🌱 Select your size from the menu and we’ll send you a healthy, hungry plant from our current batch. Originally imported from Christian Klein in Germany, this hybrid has grown in popularity across South Africa — and thanks to our careful growing process, we’re able to offer a variety of well-established sizes to suit your setup.

🪴 Plant Personality

  • Hybrid: Pinguicula Gigantea × Moctezumae – a cross between the giant, oval-leaved gigantea (up to 30cm!) and the elegant, thin-leaved moctezumae
  • Growth Style: Rosette-forming carnivorous plant with succulent-like leaves
  • Flowers: Soft pink blooms appear at the end of winter once mature and will continue regularly
  • Best Spot: Indoor windowsills, terrariums, paludariums, and semi-shade outdoor areas

🌿 Size & Growth

  • Current Sizes Available: 3–5cm • 6–9cm • 12–15cm leafspan
  • Mature Size: Up to 20cm+ leafspan
  • Growth Season: Active from late spring through summer
  • Dormancy: Growth slows in winter and the leaves become smaller — but thanks to its gigantea parent, this hybrid stays leafy and does not form the tight succulent rosette typical of most Mexican butterworts

📦 How It Ships

  • Shipping Method: Bareroot (not potted), roots wrapped in moist paper
  • Optional Add-on: Add Butterwort PROmix™ soil for perfect drainage and airflow

☀️ Care Summary

  • 💡 Bright light – ideal for sunny windowsills, terrariums, or under grow lights
  • 💧 Use only rain, distilled, or RO water
  • 🪴 Plant in well-aerated, nutrient-free carnivorous plant soil
  • ❄️ Leaves remain visible in winter – no tight dormancy rosette
  • 🪰 No feeding required – it catches its own snacks!
  • 🌿 Great for beginners, collectors, and terrarium enthusiasts

Personally imported and grown out at Cultivo, each plant is fully acclimatised to South African conditions — making it easier to settle in, more resilient and quicker to grow once it reaches you

📦 Quick FAQs

Why is my butterwort sent bareroot?

Butterworts have shallow, sensitive roots — and over the years, we’ve found that shipping them without soil is the safest way to avoid rot and prevent damage. They’re quick to pot up and settle in beautifully once they arrive.

When will I receive my plant?

Orders are processed within 24 hours on weekdays. Estimated delivery appears below the ADD TO CART button based on your location.

Will my plant be safe during shipping?

Absolutely! Each plant is wrapped with care using our deluxe packaging method, backed by Cultivo’s Alive Arrive Guarantee.
