In South Africa, Nepenthes are sometimes confused with “Oupa se pyp” (Dutchman's Pipe / Calico Flower), which is a non-carnivorous plant in the Aristolochia family. While both have pitcher-shaped structures, only Nepenthes are true carnivores, evolved to actively catch and digest insects.
