Exciting Sarracenia Hybrid – A Special Import for Collectors!
This is something really special. Imported from Europe, Sarracenia 'Barba' is a striking trumpet pitcher hybrid with rich red colouration, upright pitchers, and a frilled lid that gives it a bearded appearance — hence the name.
Believed to be related to S. mitchelliana crossed with a purpurea mix, this hybrid combines beauty, vigour and curiosity in one collector's plant. Fully acclimatised to South African conditions, Barba thrives in full sun and develops upright summer pitchers with confidence. Each plant ships in our exclusive Rootball Plug™ – a safe, lightweight alternative to pots that makes transplanting into your own soil a breeze.
Whether planted on its own or as part of a mixed bog setup, this medium-sized hybrid adds colour and height to your carnivorous plant collection. It's one of those plants you'll wish you'd own sooner!

🌿 Care Instructions
LIGHT:
- Grow in full sun for strong growth and colouration. A minimum of 6 hours of direct light is recommended.
- Protect from hail or extreme heatwaves by moving to a sheltered spot temporarily if needed.
WATER:
- Keep soil consistently moist using rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water.
- Top watering is fine; avoid filling pitchers directly as they may topple.
- Allow the tray to dry out briefly between waterings to oxygenate the roots, but never let the soil dry completely.
FEEDING:
- Sarracenia are self-sufficient hunters – no feeding required.
- They catch and digest insects as natural fertiliser. Never feed human food (no biltong or viennas 😄).
SOIL:
- Use only sphagnum-peat based carnivorous plant soil – never garden soil, compost or fertilised potting mix.
- Repot into fresh carnivorous plant soil at the end of winter dormancy each year.
WINTER DORMANCY:
- Sarracenia go dormant in winter – they’ll stop growing and pitchers may die back partially or completely.
- Plants are sold as trimmed rhizomes in winter. New growth will emerge in spring once conditions warm up.
- For more info, see our winter dormancy guide.
Note: Images show mature plants during peak summer growth. During the colder months plants will be sent as clean dormant rhizomes (winter bulbs) with trimmed pitchers. Dormant plants may appear smaller with few or no pitchers until spring.

- Just a quick heads-up: Since plants are natural products, you might notice some slight variations when unboxing your plants
- We do our best to make sure the plants you receive look like the ones in the photos, but keep in mind that seasons change and plants grow. Some leaves might age and die off, new ones might sprout and the plants may look a bit different over time
- 99% of what we sell are one-of-a-kind collector items, so you will receive the exact plant pictured. The labels are spot on, so even if the plant looks a bit different, we 100% guarantee it's the real deal
- Also, all the photos you see are of our own plants unless we mention otherwise. We update images occasionally to keep things fresh. If you want to see updated pictures before you buy, just let us know – we're happy to help!
