❓❗ Is winter a bad time to buy carnivorous plants in South Africa?

💬 Honestly? There’s never a wrong time to buy carnivorous plants! 😉 and winter even comes with a few surprising advantages! Ideally, it all depends on your goals — what you want to grow, why you're buying and where you’ll be growing them

Some species, like Venus flytraps, sarracenia pitchers and some sundews, naturally enter their winter rest between April and September. Because they’re trimmed back or smaller, shipping is lighter, safer and costs less — and they settle into their new home much faster. Plus, by next winter, you’ll already know exactly what to expect (and save yourself a few grey hairs along the way!)

Others — like sundews, tropical pitcher plants and bladderworts — stay awake and growing all year round, especially if you're growing them in terrariums or indoors under artificial lights

✅ If you’re keen to get started now, there’s always something growing and thriving!
✅ Dormant plants are just “sleeping” — not dying — and they bounce back beautifully in spring.

🌿 Winter is actually the perfect time to welcome a carnivorous plant home! Dormant plants quietly settle into their new surroundings during their rest phase — so when spring arrives, they wake up healthy, happy and already adjusted to their new home.

💡 Growing indoors in a terrarium or under lights? Even better! With the right setup, your tropical and sub-tropical plants can stay active and growing all year round — making winter the perfect time to start your own ever-green savage garden indoors
