Live sphagnum moss — ready to use, ready to grow.
This is living sphagnum moss in strand form, prepared and used in our own growing setups as a top dressing, propagation layer and humidity buffer for carnivorous plants.
Simply place it on top of your soil — it helps retain moisture, stabilise growing conditions and creates a natural growing surface your plants will thrive in.
Long, live strands are especially useful when you want to cover more surface area quickly, whether you are topping a young Nepenthes plant, dressing a sundew pot, adding a lush finishing layer to a terrarium setup, or using it for propagation and cuttings.

Why growers use live sphagnum moss
- Improves surface moisture: Helps prevent the top layer of the pot from drying out too quickly, especially for Nepenthes, sundews, Heliamphora and other moisture-loving carnivorous plants.
- Creates a natural top layer: Ideal for terrariums, display pots and collector plants where presentation matters just as much as function.
- Excellent for propagation: Naturally anti-fungal and widely used for cuttings, seedling setups and establishing sensitive young plants.
- Works as a humidity buffer: Absorbs and releases moisture gradually, helping to create a more stable growing environment.
- Keeps growing: In the right conditions, it can establish, spread and be reused over time.
- Versatile across different setups: Suitable for carnivorous plants, orchids, terrariums, vivariums, bog gardens and other wetland-style plantings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between sphagnum strands, heads and live cultures?
Strands are longer pieces of live sphagnum that can be spread out to cover a larger surface area more quickly. Each strand has multiple growth points, which means it can establish and produce new heads over time.
Heads are compact growing tips, usually used for more controlled placement or propagation, while live cultures are established portions designed for growing out and expanding into larger quantities.
👉 If you want to create a natural top layer or cover more surface area faster, strands are usually the most efficient option.
You can compare the different options in our live sphagnum moss collection.
Can I use this with Nepenthes, sundews, orchids and terrarium plants?
Yes. Live sphagnum strands are especially useful for Nepenthes, sundews, orchids, Heliamphora, cobra lilies and humidity-loving terrarium plants.
For best results, use pure water and place the moss where it will receive bright light and good humidity.
You can also combine it with our terrarium soil and supplies and specialised growing media depending on your setup.
Can I use live sphagnum moss in a terrarium?
Yes — live sphagnum moss thrives in humid environments and works exceptionally well in terrariums and vivariums. It can be used as a top layer, around plants, or as part of a natural growing system.
We also show exactly how to use it in real setups — including plant placement, layering and long-term care — during our hands-on workshops.
