Venus flytrap and subtropical sundew seeds typically germinate in 4-8 weeks, while pitcher plants range from 6-10 weeks to several months depending on species and treatment. Fresh seed generally offers the best chance of successful germination, which is why we focus on freshly harvested, carefully stored seed and germination-test suitable batches before offering them for sale. Do carnivorous plant seeds need stratification?

It depends on the species. Some carnivorous plant seeds benefit from cold stratification or seasonal cues to break dormancy, while many tropical and subtropical species can be sown immediately when the seeds are fresh.

I've been cheated before by buying 'blue Venus flytrap seeds' online - how sure can I be I'm getting real carnivorous plant seeds?

Cultivo is a specialist carnivorous plant grower and collector. We grow many of our plants ourselves from seed and use tried-and-tested germination methods developed through years of hands-on growing. No gimmicks or fake blue Venus flytraps - just genuine carnivorous plant seeds from cultivated plants and carefully selected seed batches.

Why are some carnivorous plant seeds sold out at Cultivo?

The quick answer: we only offer seed when it's fresh and genuinely available. Carnivorous plant seed availability can be very limited and unpredictable. Unlike ordinary garden seeds produced commercially in huge quantities, many carnivorous plants can take years to reach flowering maturity before they produce seed at all.

Much of our seed is harvested from mature plants in our own cultivated collection. Seed production depends on flowering, successful pollination and the amount of viable seed produced, while some species also have relatively short viability windows. We germination-test suitable seed batches before offering them for sale and carefully manage freshly harvested seed.

Species such as Darlingtonia, Cephalotus, Nepenthes, Pinguicula and Byblis (rainbow plants) may therefore appear only occasionally. When a particular carnivorous plant seed or seed collection is sold out, availability depends on when suitable fresh seed becomes available again - which could be months, years or, for some species, much longer.

How do you store carnivorous plant seeds before shipping?

Seed viability is everything at Cultivo. We carefully store freshly harvested carnivorous plant seeds under appropriate conditions to help maintain viability until they're ready for sowing. Species with shorter viability windows, including some Nepenthes, Pinguicula, Darlingtonia and Cephalotus, require particularly careful handling, which is one reason seed availability can change so quickly.

Can I grow highland Nepenthes from seed in South Africa?

Yes, but highland Nepenthes require more specialised growing conditions. They generally prefer cooler nights and suitable humidity, light and temperature conditions, which can make them more challenging to grow from seed in some parts of South Africa. What's the difference between Drosera capensis seeds and other sundew species?

Drosera capensis, or the Cape sundew, is native to South Africa and is one of the easiest and most rewarding carnivorous plants to grow from seed. Other sundew species can have very different requirements depending on whether they're tropical, subtropical, temperate or pygmy sundews. Germination requirements can differ between species, particularly when it comes to temperature and seasonal treatments such as cold stratification.

Do you sell carnivorous plant seeds that are CITES-listed or protected?

Cultivo is committed to responsible, ethical cultivation. Our carnivorous plants and seeds come from our own cultivated collection or established specialist sources - never from wild-collected plants. Where species are subject to CITES or other biodiversity regulations, we respect the applicable requirements. Cultivo currently sells and ships within South Africa only.

Why do some carnivorous plant seeds cost more than others?

Carnivorous plant seed prices can vary considerably depending on rarity, availability, pollination difficulty and how quickly the seed loses viability.
