THE CARNIVOROUS PLANT ENTHUSIAST:  I'm looking to expand my collection with a little more variety and add a few challenges to the mix

Start here as an absolute beginner... Where do you want to grow your new carnivorous plant?

    • Indoors on a north-facing windowsill (4-6 hours direct sunlight)
      • We recommend:  an upright or rosetted sundew, mexican butterwort and/or an intermediate tropical pitcher plant (monkey cup)
    • Outdoors in dappled shade (eg. shaded by a tree)
      • We recommend:  an upright or rosetted sundew, mexican butterwort, intermediate tropical pitcher plant (monkey cup) and/or a terrestrial bladderwort
    • Outdoors in full (8+hours) direct sunlight: (not sunlight through a window)
      • We recommend:  a venus flytrap, trumpet pitcher plant, purple pitcher plant, and/or a terrestrial bladderwort

Once you feel you are ready to advance to the next level....

    • Indoors on a north-facing windowsill (4-6 hours direct sunlight)
      • We recommend:  A cobra lily, sun pitcher and/or an albany pitcher plant
    • Outdoors in dappled shade (eg. shaded by a tree)
      • We recommend:  A cobra lily, forkleaf sundew, albany pitcher plant, sun pitcher and/or parrot pitcher plant
    • Outdoors in full (8+hours) direct sunlight:
      • We recommend:  a cobra lily, forkleaf sundew, venus flytrap, trumpet pitcher plant, purple pitcher plant and/or parrot pitcher plant

    You need to know that....

    • Some plants go dormant (die back to a winterbulb) during the winter months - these are called temperate plants  Temperate plants only grow actively during spring and summer - venus flytraps, temperate sundews, purple pitcher plants, trumpet pitcher plants, parrot pitcher plants, cobra lilies all fall into this category
    • Given enough light during wintertime, subtropical sundews, tropical pitcher plants and bladderworts will grow throughout the year.  Most bladderworts only flower during the warmer months

    Got it! one quick question:

    • Q: I'm an absolute beginner.  Would you recommend starting with an actual plant or seed?
    • A: In optimal conditions it takes around 4-6 weeks for carnivorous plant seed to germinate and in most cases it will be approximately 3-5 years to reach a size that you can brag about to your friends.  We'd recommend starting with a plant and then advance to growing them from seed once you are more comfortable with the growing conditions needed for each species
All beginner plants are sent potted in our deluxe carnivorous plant soil, tailored to the needs of each species - simply unwrap, place in a tray of water and enjoy!
    Perfect for beginners
