Forkleaf Sundews (Drosera binata) for Beginners

Perfect for growers who want dramatic, architectural carnivorous plants. Forkleaf sundews are Australian natives with a striking appearance—tall, forked leaves covered in glistening sticky droplets that sparkle in the light and trap unsuspecting insects. These are among the most visually impressive sundews, combining beauty with effective insect-catching abilities.

Why forkleaf sundews are ideal for beginners: Hardy, fast-growing and forgiving, these sundews adapt well to South African conditions and reward you with vigorous growth during the warmer months. They're easy to care for and put on a spectacular show when actively growing.

What Makes Forkleaf Sundews Special?

  • Architectural beauty – Tall, forked leaves create a dramatic silhouette unlike any other sundew
  • Glistening traps – Hundreds of sticky droplets catch the light and lure insects to their doom
  • Fast growers – Mature plants can reach 15-25cm tall during peak growing season
  • Effective pest control – Excellent at catching flies, gnats and small flying insects like midges
  • Mature plants – Our beginner range includes plants at least 3 years old (5-8cm in summer), ready to thrive
  • Available in three sizes – Choose the perfect size for your space and budget

Understanding Dormancy (Important!)

Forkleaf sundews are summer-growing plants that require a winter rest period to store energy for the next growing season. This is completely natural and essential for their long-term health.

What to expect:

  • Summer (October–March): Active growth with tall, forked leaves covered in sticky dew
  • Winter (April–Aug): Plants enter dormancy and die back to a small winter bud with no leaves visible
  • Spring regrowth: New leaves emerge from the rootstock as temperatures warm

Winter shipping note: During colder months, plants are sent as dormant specimens with only a winter bud visible above the soil. This is normal! They're already potted in our premium soil - made for sundews - and will regrow vigorously in spring.

Care at a Glance

Light: Full sun outdoors (8+ hours). More light = more dew = better trapping. Also thrives in terrariums with full-spectrum LED grow lights.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist using the self-watering tray system. Use rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water only—never tap water.
Humidity: Moderate (25-70%). Adapts well to outdoor conditions and terrarium environments.
Temperature: Warm summers (20-35°C), cool winters (5-10°C) for dormancy.
Dormancy: Required. Reduce watering slightly in winter but keep soil damp. Plants will regrow in spring.
Feeding: Catches its own prey outdoors. No manual feeding needed.
Growing location: Best grown outdoors like Venus flytraps and Sarracenia pitcher plants. Also suitable for terrariums with full-spectrum LED lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

My plant has no leaves in winter—is it dead?
No! Forkleaf sundews naturally die back to a small winter bud during dormancy. This is essential for their health. Keep the soil damp and wait for spring regrowth.

How do I know if my plant is getting enough light?
Healthy forkleaf sundews produce abundant sticky dew on their leaves. If the leaves are 'floppy', dry or pale, increase light exposure.

Can I skip dormancy and keep it growing year-round?
No—dormancy is essential for long-term health. Without a winter rest, plants will weaken and eventually die. Embrace the seasonal cycle!

Can I use tap water?
No—tap water contains minerals that will harm carnivorous plants. Always use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis (low-mineral) water.

How big will it get?
Mature forkleaf sundews in our beginner range can reach 15-25cm tall during peak growing season, with multiple forked leaves creating a dramatic display.

Can I grow it indoors?
Forkleaf sundews are best grown outdoors in full sun, similar to Venus flytraps and Sarracenia pitcher plants. They can also thrive in terrariums equipped with full-spectrum LED grow lights, but outdoor growing produces the most vigorous plants.

Disclaimer
  • Just a quick heads-up: Since plants are natural products, you might notice some slight variations when unboxing your plants
  • We do our best to make sure the plants you receive look like the ones in the photos, but keep in mind that seasons change and plants grow. Some leaves might age and die off, new ones might sprout and the plants may look a bit different over time
  • Cultivo is a boutique-style store and 99% of what we sell are one-of-a-kind collector items, so you will receive the exact plant pictured. Some are once-off or limited releases, which means they are available only while stocks last. The labels are spot on, so even if the plant looks a bit different, we 100% guarantee it’s the real deal
  • Also, all the photos you see are of our own plants unless we mention otherwise. We update images occasionally to keep things fresh. If you want to see updated pictures before you buy, just let us know - we’re happy to help!
