Plant Description
  • Species: Drosera
  • Native to South Africa, the cape sundew (also known as the octopus plant) grows vigorously and produces rather large leaves at maturity
  • An upright grower, The typical variety of the cape sundew produces long green, slender leaves with red tentacles
  • This is one of most popular starter plants and a fantastic candidate for beginner carnivorous plant enthusiasts

Bareroot or potted?
  • We recommend sundews as potted plants for beginner carnivorous plant enthusiasts - simply unwrap, water and enjoy!  Potted plants are sent with a protective covering and will be good in this soil for another 6-9 months.  Planter sizes are selected in relation to plant size and range from 5cm to 10cm pots unless otherwise mentioned
  • Bare root plants are for those who wish to pot up and acclimatise their own plants.  Sundews generally have very fragile roots and may take a while to settle in.  Bareroot plants are rinsed and sent in a protective covering with roots wrapped in damp paper towels

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PLANT

Plant care & special considerations
  • 🏡 Grow in a frost free area outdoors or terrarium with 12-16 hours artificial (full spectrum) lighting
  • ☀️ Requires a minimum 6 hours direct sunlight
  • 💧 Moist, nutrient-free soil (rain or distilled water)
  • 🍴 No need to feed
  • 🌷 Cut flowerstalks for a healthier, dewy plant
  • 💤 No Dormancy required.  Grow in semi-shade during summer

Special considerations:

  • Drosera Capensis grow year-round and can adapt to almost any condition 
  • As a mountainous species, this plant likes a very sunny window with mild temperatures. It may slow down significantly during the hottest parts of summer, but watch it take off again when the weather cools down
  • Cape sundews produce flower stalks up to 30 cm tall with numerous showy, pink flowers.  Flowering requires a lot of energy and might cause your plant to lose it's dew.  Cut flower stalks when they emerge for a healthier, dewy plant
