Venus Flytrap 'Maroon Monster' • Flytrapstore USA

Maroon Monster Venus Flytrap - The Majestic Lady in Red

This one has always had a soft spot in my heart. If you're looking for a colourful showstopper and a true collector's flytrap, Maroon Monster is hard to overlook.

Originally imported from the renowned FlytrapStore in the USA, Maroon Monster is a striking named cultivar known for its deep maroon-red summer growth and impressive traps. It is a slower-growing flytrap, but once the growing season gets underway, the rich colour and bold upright growth make it well worth the wait.

This established collector plant is fully acclimatised to South African outdoor conditions and full sun. Maroon Monster develops into a medium to large-sized flytrap, reaching approximately 7-8 cm across in summer.

What Makes Maroon Monster So Special?

• Special import from FlytrapStore, USA - originally selected for my own collection
• Deep maroon-red summer growth - one of the features that makes this cultivar so distinctive
• Medium to large-sized cultivar - reaching approximately 7-8 cm across in summer
• Fully acclimatised to South African outdoor growing and full sun
• Established collector plant - not a newly imported or freshly acclimatised plant
• Exact plant pictured - only one available

Current Look - Waking Up for Spring

Growing Maroon Monster

Like other Venus flytraps, Maroon Monster is a temperate carnivorous plant and grows best outdoors in plenty of direct sun. Keep it standing in a shallow tray of rain, distilled or purified water during active growth and always use a suitable carnivorous plant growing medium.

In winter, the plant enters its natural winter rest and may become considerably smaller as older traps die back. Fresh growth emerges again in spring before the plant develops its larger summer form.

How Your Collector Flytrap Is Shipped

Collector Venus flytraps are supplied bareroot, with the roots carefully wrapped in moist sphagnum moss for safe transit. This is a standard way of shipping collector carnivorous plants and allows you to pot your new flytrap directly into your preferred growing setup when it arrives.

Whether you're adding it to an outdoor bog garden, a display pot or your preferred Venus flytrap mix, you're free to choose the setup that works best for your collection rather than receiving the plant in a temporary nursery pot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Maroon Monster smaller in winter and early spring?

Maroon Monster has a noticeable winter rest and can die back quite significantly during the colder months. Early spring plants may therefore look much smaller than their full summer size. As temperatures rise, fresh traps emerge and the plant gradually develops its stronger summer growth.

Is Maroon Monster a slow-growing Venus flytrap?

Yes. Maroon Monster can be a slower-growing cultivar, particularly when compared with some of the more vigorous Venus flytraps. Its rich colour and impressive summer growth are worth the patience.

Will it stay dark maroon all year?

No. Colour and growth habit change naturally throughout the year. Strong direct sun during the active growing season encourages the characteristic rich maroon-red colour, while winter and early spring growth can look smaller and less intensely coloured.

Does it need winter dormancy?

Yes. Venus flytraps are temperate plants and benefit from their natural winter rest. Older traps may blacken and die back and the plant can become very compact before fresh growth begins again in spring.

• Just a quick heads-up: Since plants are natural products, you might notice some slight variations when unboxing your plants
• We do our best to make sure the plants you receive look like the ones in the photos, but keep in mind that seasons change and plants grow. Some leaves might age and die off, new ones might sprout and the plants may look a bit different over time
• Cultivo is a boutique-style store and 99% of what we sell are one-of-a-kind collector items, so you will receive the exact plant pictured. Some are once-off or limited releases, which means they are available only while stocks last. The labels are spot on, so even if the plant looks a bit different, we 100% guarantee it’s the real deal
• Also, all the photos you see are of our own plants unless we mention otherwise. We update images occasionally to keep things fresh. If you want to see updated pictures before you buy, just let us know - we’re happy to help!
