Over 15 years ago, I started out as a curious hobbyist. Back then, the options in South Africa were painfully limited. You’d be lucky to find a Venus flytrap or a single sundew at the local hardware store. If there was a pitcher plant, it was a rare surprise - and advice? There was none.
Like many beginners, I brought plants home, followed the label (if there even was one), and hoped for the best.
Let’s just say… I killed more plants than I care to count. 😅
By this time the addiction was real and I ain't no quitter so I eventually I moved online - buy something through the mail on this revolutionary new thing called the Internet, hoping for better quality and variety. Instead, I got mislabeled plants, poor packaging, not so fantastic service and the odd disappearing act
Ordering internationally brought its own challenges - unreliable delivery services, currency conversion shocks, customs issues… and worst of all, buying from websites that used stock photos, so you never really knew what you were going to get
And the worst part? I still had no real support. No one local who understood what it’s like trying to grow these cool plants in South Africa - with load shedding, water issues climate that global advice just doesn’t cover. Just another dead plant.
That’s why I started Cultivo Carnivores.
I wanted to create the kind of experience I wished I had when I was starting out:

And since there’s still no true walk-in shop in South Africa where you can explore carnivorous plants in person, I’ve partnered with a few trusted retail outlets to make selected plants available in-store - so you can see them up close and pick up something special.
