The Purple Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea) is bold, architectural and surprisingly easy to grow. Unlike most pitcher plants that rely on a lid to keep rain out, the Purple Pitcher does the opposite — it welcomes rainwater in, using it to drown and digest its prey. It's nature's own little death pool, and it's absolutely stunning.

Each pitcher is a deep, veined cup that fills with rainwater and digestive enzymes. Insects are lured in by colour and nectar, slip on the waxy inner walls, and can't escape. No need to feed or fertilise — it literally feeds itself. And in full sun, those pitchers flush the most incredible deep reds and purples you've ever seen on a plant.

Does it really drown its prey?
Yes! Unlike other pitcher plants that keep rain out, Sarracenia purpurea actually collects rainwater in its pitchers. Insects fall in, can't escape the waxy walls, and get digested by enzymes and bacteria in the fluid. Nature's most elegant death trap.

Why do the pitchers die back in winter?
Totally normal! Purple Pitchers go dormant in winter (May–Aug), and the pitchers die back while the plant recharges underground. Keep the soil damp and wait — new pitchers emerge in spring with a vengeance.

Can I use tap water?
No — tap water contains minerals that will harm carnivorous plants over time. Always use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis (low-mineral) water.

Can I grow it indoors?
Purple Pitchers need full outdoor sun and natural seasonal temperature changes for dormancy. They're not suited to indoor growing — give them a sunny outdoor spot and they'll reward you spectacularly.
