🌿 Mexican Butterwort (Pinguicula) – The Prettiest Little Predator You've Never Heard Of
If you've never heard of a Pinguicula, you're in for a treat. The Mexican Butterwort is the carnivorous plant world's best-kept secret — a compact, rosette-shaped beauty with soft, fleshy leaves that glisten with a sticky coating so subtle you almost can't see it. But fungus gnats and tiny flies? They find it immediately. And they don't leave.
It looks like a succulent. It acts like flypaper. And when it flowers — which it does freely — it produces the most delicate, orchid-like blooms that'll make you do a double-take. This is the plant that surprises everyone who sees it.
All of our plants are locally grown and fully adjusted to our climate — so they're ready to grow from day one, no matter where you are in SA! This Beginner-range plant comes pre-planted in a colourful DECO planter with our long-term carnivorous plant soil mix — just carefully unwrap, top up the tray with water and enjoy. It honestly doesn't get easier (or more surprising) than this!
Oh, and because it's Cultivo, you'll also get a detailed South African care guide and free after-sales support to help your plant settle into its new home.
🌿 Highlights
- The carnivorous plant nobody expects – Looks like a succulent, catches like flypaper. Guests will never guess it's a predator until you tell them.
- How it works – Leaves are coated in a microscopic sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats and tiny flies land, get stuck, and are slowly digested by enzymes on the leaf surface. No moving parts, no drama — just quiet, efficient predation.
- Grow it for the flowers – Unlike most carnivorous plants, Butterworts and Bladderworts are the flowering stars of the range. Pinguicula produce beautiful, delicate orchid-like blooms (typically purple or violet) on tall stalks — freely and often. Many growers keep them purely for the flowers. The bug-catching is just a bonus.
- Perfect windowsill houseplant – Compact, low-maintenance and stunning on a bright windowsill. Also thrives in terrariums and paludariums — a favourite in the succulent and orchid community for good reason.
- Winter rest – During the colder months, Pinguicula die back to a compact succulent-like rosette with tiny, non-carnivorous leaves. Totally normal — they're conserving energy and will bounce back with full carnivorous leaves in spring, often preceded by a flush of flowers at the end of winter.
- Perfect for beginners – Incredibly forgiving and low-maintenance. If you've kept a succulent alive, you've absolutely got this.
-
Sizes available – Choose your perfect fit:
• Starter (3+ years old, 3–4 cm)
• Specimen (4+ years old, 5–7 cm) - Format – Pre-planted in our deluxe long-term carnivorous plant soil mix inside a colourful DECO planter with clip-on tray. Keep the tray topped up with rain or low-mineral water and you're set — no repotting until next August.
- Bonus – Includes our full care guide, Alive Arrival Guarantee and ongoing support from your local carnivorous plant experts right here in South Africa.
This quiet little predator is guaranteed to become your most-talked-about plant. Between the succulent-like looks, the invisible sticky traps and those stunning orchid flowers — it's impossible not to fall for it. Subtle, surprising and full of personality — the Mexican Butterwort is proof that the best carnivorous plants don't always shout.

Quick FAQ
Can I let it flower?
Yes — and you absolutely should! Unlike most carnivorous plants where the trapping is the main event, Butterworts and Bladderworts are the flowering stars of the beginner range. Pinguicula flower freely and often, producing delicate orchid-like blooms on tall stalks. Many growers keep them purely for the flowers. Let it do its thing — it's spectacular.
Does it really catch bugs if I can't see the sticky stuff?
Yes — 100%! The mucilage is there, it's just very fine. Fungus gnats are particularly susceptible and will be caught without you even noticing. Check the leaves closely in good light and you'll see the subtle glisten.
Why does it look like a succulent in winter?
Mexican Butterworts naturally die back to a compact, non-carnivorous rosette during the colder months. This is their winter rest — totally normal. They'll produce full carnivorous leaves again in spring, often preceded by a flush of flowers at the end of winter.
Can I use tap water?
No — tap water contains minerals that will harm carnivorous plants over time. Always use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis (low-mineral) water.
Is it good for terrariums and paludariums?
Absolutely — one of the best. Compact, humidity-loving and visually stunning mounted on rocks or cork bark. A favourite in the terrarium, paludarium and orchid community for good reason.

Quick FAQ
Why Pargo and not PUDO?
We partner with Pargo because it’s part of our approved fragile-goods courier network. Parcels are kept indoors at local shops and businesses, protected from heat, sunlight and weather until collection — ideal if you prefer to collect at your convenience or aren’t home during the day.
To keep every order safe and uphold our Arrive-Alive Guarantee, we deliver only via Pargo and other approved delivery services trusted for handling fragile and temperature-sensitive items.
- Just a quick heads-up: Since plants are natural products, you might notice some slight variations when unboxing your plants
- We do our best to make sure the plants you receive look like the ones in the photos, but keep in mind that seasons change and plants grow. Some leaves might age and die off, new ones might sprout and the plants may look a bit different over time
- Cultivo is a boutique-style store and 99% of what we sell are one-of-a-kind collector items, so you will receive the exact plant pictured. Some are once-off or limited releases, which means they are available only while stocks last. The labels are spot on, so even if the plant looks a bit different, we 100% guarantee it’s the real deal
- Also, all the photos you see are of our own plants unless we mention otherwise. We update images occasionally to keep things fresh. If you want to see updated pictures before you buy, just let us know - we’re happy to help!
