Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) – The Legendary Snap-Trap Plant
If there's one carnivorous plant everyone knows, it's this one. The Venus flytrap is the OG bug-catcher — made famous by Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors ("Feed me, Seymour!"), Super Mario's piranha plants, and countless nature documentaries. And honestly? Watching those jaw-like traps snap shut in real-time never gets old. It's pure, satisfying plant magic.
Each trap is lined with tiny trigger hairs — when a bug touches them twice, SNAP — the trap closes in less than a second. It's fast, it's dramatic, and it's absolutely mesmerizing to watch. There's something wildly satisfying about seeing your plant catch its own lunch while you sip your coffee.
And here's the best part — these aren't fragile tissue-culture clones or gimmicky "flytrap kits." Every single one of ours is seed-grown right here in South Africa, which means they're tougher, more resilient, and already used to outdoor conditions from day one. Because they're seed-grown, each plant has unique genetics — kinda like siblings with the same family traits but totally different personalities. No two will look exactly alike, and that's part of the charm.
All plants in our Beginner range are at least 3 years old (5-6cm in summer, up to 10-12cm when fully grown), with fully functioning traps ready to catch bugs from the moment they arrive. They come pre-planted in a colourful DECO planter with our long-term carnivorous plant soil mix — so you don't have to repot until next August. Just unwrap, water with rain or low-mineral water, give it full sun, and you're set.
Oh, and because it's Cultivo, you'll also get a detailed South African care guide and free after-sales support to help your plant thrive in our climate.
Highlights
- The most famous carnivorous plant on the planet – Iconic snap-traps that close in under a second. Pure plant theatre.
- Seed-grown = stronger & unique – Not fragile clones. Each one is tougher, more resilient, and genetically unique — like siblings, not twins.
- Fully functioning traps from day one – These are real, established plants (3+ years old) with traps ready to catch bugs the moment they arrive.
- Summer grower with winter rest – Flytraps naturally slow down in winter (May–Sept) and may look smaller or trimmed back. That's totally normal — they're recharging underground and will regrow full traps come spring. In this pot, with full sun in summer, they'll sleep and wake up without issues.
- Bright sun = bright red traps – The more sun it gets, the redder and more dramatic the traps become. Outdoor full sun is where they really shine.
-
Sizes available – Choose your perfect fit:
• Starter (3+ years old, 5–6 cm)
• Medium (4+ years old, 7–8 cm)
• Large (5+ years old, 9 cm+) - Format – Pre-planted in our deluxe long-term carnivorous plant soil mix inside a colourful DECO planter with clip-on tray. Keep the tray topped up with rain or low-mineral water and you're good to go — no repotting until next August.
- Bonus – Includes our full care guide, Alive Arrival Guarantee and ongoing support from your local carnivorous plant experts right here in South Africa.
This is the plant that started it all for so many growers — and once you see those traps snap shut in person, you'll understand why. Between the speed, the drama, and the sheer coolness of owning a real bug-eating plant, it's impossible not to get hooked. Iconic, satisfying, and full of personality — the Venus flytrap is proof that carnivorous plants really are as awesome as they look on screen.

Quick FAQ
Why does my flytrap look smaller in winter?
Great question! During the colder months (April–Sept), Venus flytraps take a seasonal rest and don't grow actively. We trim back the old summer growth before shipping so your plant is already prepped and ready for the upcoming growing season. It may arrive looking smaller, with just a few tiny traps visible above the soil — and that's completely normal. Come spring, it will regrow full traps and start feeding like a champ. Your plant is just recharging for the summer season 🌱
Can I grow it outside?
Absolutely! Venus flytraps love full sun and outdoor conditions. The more sun, the redder and healthier the traps. Perfect for sunny balconies, patios, or bog gardens.
Do the traps really snap shut?
Yes — 100%! Each trap has tiny trigger hairs inside. When a bug touches them twice, the trap snaps shut in under a second. It's fast, dramatic, and endlessly satisfying to watch.
How big does a Venus flytrap get?
A healthy, mature Venus flytrap can grow 10–12cm across in summer, with individual traps reaching 2–3cm long under full sun. Size depends on age, light and growing conditions - the more sun, the bigger and redder the traps!

Can I buy Venus flytraps in winter in South Africa?
Yep! We've got Venus flytraps available all year long in — even during the winter months in South Africa. They'll arrive dormant or semi-dormant with smaller traps, which is totally natural for this time of year. Your plant is healthy and just taking a seasonal nap — come spring, it'll wake up and regrow those iconic snap-traps like a champ. It's actually the perfect time to get one settled in so it's ready to absolutely thrive when the growing season kicks off!

Frequently Asked Question
Why do you use Pargo instead of PUDO?
We partner with Pargo because it forms part of our approved fragile-goods courier network. Parcels are stored indoors at local businesses, protected from heat, direct sunlight and the weather until collection. It's an excellent option if you're not home during the day or prefer collecting your parcel when it's convenient.
To protect every order and uphold our Arrive-Alive Guarantee, we use only Pargo and other approved delivery services trusted to transport fragile and temperature-sensitive plants safely.
- Just a quick heads-up: Since plants are natural products, you might notice some slight variations when unboxing your plants
- We do our best to make sure the plants you receive look like the ones in the photos, but keep in mind that seasons change and plants grow. Some leaves might age and die off, new ones might sprout and the plants may look a bit different over time
- Cultivo is a boutique-style store and 99% of what we sell are one-of-a-kind collector items, so you will receive the exact plant pictured. Some are once-off or limited releases, which means they are available only while stocks last. The labels are spot on, so even if the plant looks a bit different, we 100% guarantee it’s the real deal
- Also, all the photos you see are of our own plants unless we mention otherwise. We update images occasionally to keep things fresh. If you want to see updated pictures before you buy, just let us know - we’re happy to help!
