Utricularia quelchii is one of the rarest and most desirable epiphytic bladderworts in cultivation. This specific clone originates from Auyán Tepui — one of Venezuela’s most iconic table mountains — and was originally collected and maintained by the Frankfurt Botanical Garden. It is a genuine collector’s plant and part of our original BCP import.
In the wild, Utricularia quelchii grows as an epiphyte in mossy tree roots, bromeliads, and wet rock crevices at high altitudes in the Tepui region. It produces small, fleshy leaves and — in time — stunning deep pink to magenta flowers with an exotic, orchid-like appearance. This is a slow-growing but exceptionally rewarding species for serious growers with high-humidity setups.
This plant is extremely rare in cultivation and requires stable, cool-to-moderate temperatures with high humidity and filtered light. You'll receive a well-rooted 5cm plug, grown out from BCP stock and fully acclimatised at Cultivo.
🪴 Growing Tips & Care Info
- 🔆 Bright filtered light – avoid harsh direct sun
- 🌿 Best suited to high-humidity environments like terrariums or grow cabinets
- 🪴 Epiphytic setup preferred – live sphagnum moss, or a mix of moss, bark, and perlite
- 💧 Keep consistently moist – never allow to dry out
- ❄️ Prefers cool to intermediate temperatures (15–23°C)
With patience, this species will settle in and slowly expand — eventually producing beautiful flowers on delicate stalks. Flowering is seasonal and triggered by stable conditions.
🌸 Flowering Info
Utricularia quelchii flowers in ideal conditions with deep pink to magenta blooms. Its striking, almost alien appearance makes it one of the most coveted Utrics among specialist growers.
This plug comes from the Auyán Tepui form, originally maintained by Frankfurt BG and imported through Best Carnivorous Plants (BCP). Grown out at Cultivo and released in extremely limited numbers.
Due to its specific needs and rarity, Utricularia quelchii is rarely offered in South Africa — and this particular clone is seldom seen worldwide. A true gem for the advanced carnivorous plant grower.
