Product Details

Venus Flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) for Beginners

Venus flytraps are the most famous of all carnivorous plants — known for their jaw-like traps that snap shut to catch insects. These small but mighty plants are native to the USA and grow best outdoors in full sun. In our ‘for beginners’ range, each plant is at least 3 years old (5-7cm in summer), grown right here in South Africa, and sent already potted for convenience.

Flytraps are summer-growing plants, which means they naturally slow down in winter. From May to September, the plant rests and may look smaller, with trimmed-back traps or only a few tiny ones above the soil. This is totally normal — your plant is saving energy in its underground bulb and will regrow full-sized traps in springtime. When fully grown, Venus flytraps can reach about 10–12cm across, with individual traps growing up to 2–3cm long in summer under full sun.

These are real, established plants — not flytrap kits or fragile clones. Each one is grown from seed and carefully raised to be stronger and more resilient, making them perfect for first-time growers. You’ll receive a healthy, well-rooted plant with fully functioning traps, ready to grow.

Quick FAQ: Why does my flytrap look smaller in winter?

Great question! During the colder months (May to Sept/Oct), Venus flytraps take a seasonal rest and don’t grow actively. We trim back the old summer growth before shipping so your plant is already prepped and ready for the upcoming growing season. It may arrive looking smaller, with just a few tiny traps visible above the soil - and that’s completely normal. Come spring, it will regrow full traps and start feeding like a champ. Your plant is just recharging for the summer season 🌱
