🧠 How Do Bladderworts Work?
Though the flowers steal the show, Utricularia sandersonii is a fully carnivorous plant. It catches microscopic prey like protozoa and water fleas using tiny underground suction traps hidden among its roots. These bladder-like traps open and snap shut in milliseconds — one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom!
Better yet, it forms a dense, mossy carpet over time — making it a perfect carnivorous groundcover for terrariums and bog gardens. It looks great, helps fill space, and still pulls its weight as a true insect-eater.
🌸 Flowering Info
The standard form of Utricularia sandersonii produces pale violet snapdragon-like blooms with a faint white centre and those signature “bunny ear” upper lobes. Once settled in, it flowers freely through spring and summer — and in terrariums, it can keep blooming almost year-round.
Most carnivorous plants do better if you snip off the flowers… but not this one. With sandersonii, the flowers are half the fun! You can leave them to bloom — it won’t set the plant back, and it actually looks awesome when the flower spikes start popping up above the mossy leaves.
ℹ️ Quick FAQ: Can I Grow This in a Terrarium?
Absolutely! U. sandersonii thrives in bright, humid setups. Just make sure it stays moist and gets plenty of filtered light. It spreads quickly and will reward you with regular blooms once settled.
