Chinese Dumpling – A Distinctive Collector Venus Flytrap

Chinese Dumpling is an unusual named Venus Flytrap cultivar best known for its chunky, compact teeth and broad traps that develop a wonderfully distinctive appearance as the plant matures.

This plant is a division from our original Chinese Dumpling, sourced from renowned carnivorous plant grower Christian Klein in Germany. It has been grown and fully acclimatised outdoors under South African conditions.

During active summer growth, Chinese Dumpling produces broad traps with short, chunky teeth that can take on an almost fused appearance. Good direct sunlight encourages stronger growth and richer colour inside the traps.

The Plant You’ll Receive

This is a medium-sized, established specimen, reaching approximately 6–7 cm in summer. The listing photographs show the exact plant for sale.

Growing Chinese Dumpling in South Africa

• Light: Grow outdoors in direct sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
• Water: Use rainwater, distilled or purified water and keep the pot standing in a shallow water tray during active growth.
• Growing medium: Use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix suitable for Venus Flytraps.
• Feeding: No feeding or fertiliser is required. Outdoors, the plant catches its own insects.
• Winter: Venus Flytraps naturally enter winter dormancy before producing fresh growth again in spring.

Why Is This Collector Flytrap Shipped Bareroot?

Collector plants at Cultivo are commonly shipped bareroot, allowing you to pot the plant directly into your preferred setup rather than receiving it in a temporary nursery pot.

Your plant will be carefully prepared with its roots wrapped in moist sphagnum moss for transit. Once received, it can be planted into your favourite Venus Flytrap growing mix, a display pot or directly into an established outdoor bog garden.

Yes. This plant has already been fully acclimatised to South African outdoor conditions and should be grown in plenty of direct sunlight.
