Description
- We are beyond excited to finally add waterwheel plants to our selection of brand new Cultivo-exclusive plant offers
- Aldrovanda vesiculosa, commonly known as the waterwheel plant, is the only species in the plant genus Aldrovanda
- Waterwheel plants are free floating carnivorous plants that grow submerged in acidic, peaty water, capturing small aquatic invertebrates such a protozoa and mosquito wigglers
- Even though Aldrovanda is part of the sundew family, these rootless, aquatic plants use tiny traps similar to those of the infamous venus flytrap to trap prey and is generally vary rare in collections
- Waterwheel plants are extremely endangered in the wild and might be challenging to grow in cultivation - this one is not for the faint of heart
Shipping
- Temperate forms of Aldrovanda Vesiculosa will go dormant as winter sets in. These winterbuds are approximately 2-5 mm in size and are also known as winter turions
- Collecting from us:
- 1 portion includes 2 sprigs - currently 2-5cm long (during summer) or 2 turions (during winter) in a watertight container
- Sent via courier:
- Plant portions and turions will be sent damp to wet and protected in a sealed watertight container
- It's highly recommended to prepare water with peat and leaf litter prior to arrival (read more)
Care
- Waterwheel plants grow submerged in acidic, peaty water that is low in nutrients, but rich in dead leaf litter
- Aldrovanda can be challenging to grow and will need additional steps in preparing a conducive habitat
