❓❗ Why are some plants shipped bareroot while others arrive pre-potted?

Short answer: Most collector plants are shipped bareroot (or in a Rootball Plug™ for fragile roots and seedlings) so you have the freedom to pot them exactly how you want - in a terrarium, bog garden, or display pot. This format is also lighter, safer and more cost-effective for shipping. The Beginner Range, on the other hand, always arrives pre-potted for convenience - simply unwrap, water & enjoy! On selected listings, you’ll also find a pre-potted option for collector plants when they’re already established and safe to ship that way.

Beginner plants: always pre-potted

  • Supplied pre-planted in the correct, nutrient-free carnivorous plant mix.
  • Simply unwrap, water & enjoy! No repotting needed now (next winter is ideal).
  • Available in multiple sizes (plus Bug-Munching Minis, 18–36 months old and transplant-ready).

Collector plants: bareroot as the standard

  • Bareroot = safer shipping (no heavy, wet soil) and lower courier costs.
  • Your setup, your way: pot into a terrarium, display pot, or bog garden as you prefer.
  • Rootball Plugs™ are used for certain fragile species/seedlings to protect delicate roots; the plug is planted as is (do not remove).
  • Occasionally, where it’s already potted and safe to ship, we’ll offer a pre-planted option on the product page.

What arrives in the box?

  • Pre-potted: Plant arrives already planted in its nursery pot with a tailored carnivorous plant soil mix. Simply unwrap, water & enjoy - no repotting needed until next winter.
  • Bareroot: Plant is shipped without pot or soil, with roots safely wrapped in moist paper towels or fresh sphagnum moss. This keeps it light, safe and cost-effective for shipping. It’s also plug-and-play for you - just pot it straight into your chosen setup (bog, terrarium, or display pot).
  • Rootball Plug™: Special Cultivo-exclusive format for fragile species and seedlings that don’t like root disturbance. It’s transplant-ready - the plug is planted directly into your medium without removal, giving maximum protection to delicate roots. Learn more about Cultivo's Rootball Plugs™.

How do I pot my plant on arrival?

  1. Unpack gently and keep the plant shaded while you prepare.
  2. Pot straight into the correct carnivorous plant soil mix (a digital plant care guide is included with every order and our PROmix™ blends are recommended for best results).
  3. Water through with rain or distilled water to settle the soil.
  4. Place in a bright spot suitable for the species, giving it a few days to settle before moving to its permanent location.
  5. For Rootball Plugs™, plant the plug directly without removing it, for maximum root protection.
